Professional teeth whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth by lifting stains that build up from coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and simple ageing. Done in a clinic, under a dentist, it is the most conservative cosmetic dental treatment there is — nothing is drilled, nothing is removed.
At Alpha Clinic Istanbul, whitening is dentist-supervised and is often the first thing we recommend when teeth are healthy and only the colour is the problem.
In-clinic vs at-home whitening
There are two honest routes to whiter teeth:
- In-clinic (professional) whitening — a higher-strength gel applied by a dentist, with your gums protected, sometimes activated by light. One session of about an hour produces a visible result on the day.
- At-home whitening — custom trays and a milder gel used over one to two weeks. Slower, but effective and easy to top up later.
Many patients combine them: an in-clinic session for the immediate change, plus trays to maintain it. Shop-bought strips and “charcoal” products are far weaker, work unevenly, and — used without supervision — can irritate gums. Whitening is one treatment where professional oversight genuinely matters.
How professional whitening works
The active ingredient is a peroxide-based gel. It passes harmlessly through the enamel and breaks down the stain molecules held inside the tooth. The enamel itself is not stripped or thinned — the tooth simply returns toward its natural, un-stained shade.
Because it works on natural tooth structure only, whitening has no effect on veneers, crowns or fillings. That is an important planning point, covered below.
Who it suits — and who needs veneers instead
Whitening is the right, conservative answer if:
- your teeth are healthy and well-shaped, and only the colour bothers you;
- the staining is the everyday kind — diet, smoking, ageing.
Whitening is not the answer if:
- you also want to change tooth shape, close gaps, or correct chips — that is cosmetic reshaping, and may call for veneers;
- the discolouration is deep or intrinsic (for example from old root treatment or certain medications) and does not respond to bleaching;
- you have decay or gum disease — that is treated first.
If you are unsure, the honest comparison is simple: whitening changes the colour of the teeth you already have; veneers change the teeth. We will tell you which your case actually needs rather than upselling the bigger treatment.
Results and how long they last
A professional session produces a brighter, even, natural shade — the goal is a believable result, not a blinding artificial white.
Whitening is maintainable, not permanent. Results typically hold from several months to a couple of years, depending on:
- your diet — coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco re-stain teeth fastest;
- your oral hygiene;
- occasional top-up treatments.
Custom take-home trays let you refresh the shade yourself when needed.
Sensitivity and safety
Dentist-supervised whitening with regulated professional gel is safe and does not damage enamel. The most common side effect is short-lived tooth sensitivity during and shortly after the session, sometimes with mild gum tingling. This settles within a day or two.
We reduce it by checking your teeth and gums are healthy first, protecting the gums during treatment, and advising sensitivity toothpaste around the appointment. Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy, or where there is untreated decay or gum disease — those are addressed first.
Why Alpha Clinic
Whitening is simple, but it is still a clinical treatment and benefits from being done properly. Alpha Clinic Turkey has worked in central Istanbul since 2012; here whitening is checked and supervised by a dentist, the result is aimed at a natural shade, and you are told honestly whether whitening — or something more — is what your teeth need.
